Yesterday we fought against major polluters’ lobbyists and managed to defend our amendments to the Draft Law 4167 ‘On Prevention, Reduction, and Control of Industrial Pollution’ at the meeting of the committee on environmental policy. Finally, we have a chance to carry out the idea which has been a taboo subject for years!
The drafters and the committee finalized the draft law together with our amendments on continuous emission monitoring systems which instantly transmit and publish data online and recommended reviewing it in the second reading at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine under the number 4167-d.
People’s deputies must pass Law 4167-d with the current version of the article on monitoring to make sure it’s possible to:
- Detect excessive air pollution and inform the population about this
- Control man-made disasters and catastrophes Impose fines for excessive emissions over long periods
- Collect enough evidence to go to court (for regulatory authorities, law enforcement agencies, and NGOs)
- Keep tens of millions of Ukrainians healthy!
We’d like to thank all of our colleagues who traditionally support ‘pipe monitoring’, law drafters, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and the Committee on Environmental Policy of the Verkhovna Rada for our fruitful cooperation and their sustainable position.
